Description |
---|
The trip is timed around the April / Easter school holidays and this will be a family/kid oriented trip, the proposed plan is to make the most of the 2 week school holiday period and leave Bendigo on Friday night to get through as much of the driving as possible over Friday, Saturday and Sunday. If all goes to plan, we should be taking the ferry across to Fraser from Inskip Point on the Sunday, and then spend at least a week camping on the island, aiming to get back before the Easter weekend.
Please register interest by the end of 2018, and those interested will meet as a group and work out a more specific itinerary that takes into account what the group as a whole would like to see and do. The island is accessible via ferry from a couple of spots, so allowances can be made for people who need to leave the trip early, wish to stay on, or explore something along the way. My thinking is that we explore the island at a leisurely pace, and visit some of the popular spots as well as some of the interesting but less visited parts of the island. |
Meeting Place and Time |
TBC |
Approximate Distance |
Getting to or from the island from Bendigo involves approximately 23 hours of driving (1,850kms) and a ferry across, expect to clock up around 4,000ks. On-island driving will depend on the itinerary |
Fuel |
Fuel is available on Fraser, however it’s expensive, recommend full tank + whatever you can easily carry |
Convoy Limit |
5 Vehicles |
Trip Rating |
Medium (trip and track difficulty reference) |
Camping |
Moving camp every day or two, and we may consider booking 1 night at a resort in the middle of the trip |
Vehicle |
4WD with Low Range, good ground clearance, front and rear recovery points, all terrain tyres tend to be better in sand than mud terrains, but either should get you through with low pressures. AWD’s are not suitable
Ensure your vehicle is recently serviced, and make sure everything is checked and greased (a breakdown can be an expensive exercise on Fraser) |
Provisions |
Camping equipment, clothing, supplies, food and water for the duration of the trip (water is available on-island but must be treated or boiled before drinking), the island has some small shops, facilities and restaurants but it’s recommended that you aim to be self-sufficient as much as possible |
Equipment |
Basic recovery kit (incl. snatch strap, shackles), long handled shovel, air compressor, UHF radio, first aid kit, maxtrax / treds recommended. |

UHF Channel 10 |
