Traveling over Mt. Skene in the snow can be a breathtaking experience, but it requires careful planning and consideration. Be sure to understand the track conditions before making the journey through Snow.
Mt. Skene is known for its stunning scenery. Take the time to stop, enjoy the spectacular views, and snow play.
Remember you need a permit through Four Wheel Drive Victoria as Licola/Jamieson road is closed from Mt Sunday Rd to Lazarnis Spur Track in winter to the end of October. It is always best to check resources such as local knowledge and other forums for up to date weather conditions and others who have experienced and travelled over Mt Skene.
We had 10 vehicles on our permit to head over Mt Skene. Friday night we stayed at the Jamieson Hotel, we made it there for dinner, as we all gathered in the Pub and got into our rooms before dinner. We had a great feed, meals were lovely and a few drinks after dinner. Before getting to bed.
Saturday 10th August 2024:
We all were up early ready for a trip over Mt Skene, some had breakfast at the local Cafe. We had a briefing on the days events. Heading out of Jamieson at 9.00am we headed up Licola/Jamieson road, it took about 45 minutes to reach the intersection at Mt Sunday road where we aired down to about 22-24psi. We got Snow at about 1000m which made us very excited seeing snow that low. We got into Low Range and started the climb up into the Mt Skene Scenic Reserve. At the first open area we pulled up for smoko and a bit of snow play. After about 1 hour we headed off again stopping at the Lookout @1574m and some great photos, as the weather was perfect, not a cloud in the sky. The snow was fairly thick in spots, great fun driving through it.

We got down to Barkly River Jeep track and we just did the short loop section, then back onto the main road. We drove around to Middle Ridge track turning left and headed up to the bottom of Barkly River Jeep track for lunch. After lunch we decided to head back over Mt Skene and we stopped again at the top and made snow men and had snow ball fights. We headed back down towards Jamieson, just getting out of the snow were back in 2wd and back down to Jamieson, getting into town at 4.00pm. We all had a bit of time before dinner, so we all did our own thing before meeting back in the Hotel for dinner. We had dinner and a few drinks sitting around the fire until about 11.00pm.
Sunday 11th August 2024:

Breakfast at the Jamieson General Store – recommend the Ham and Cheese Croisant! Then headed off at 9.30am up to Mt Terrible. Following Woods Point road to Polletti track. The track was dry and easy to drive as it gets steep in some places. We turned left onto Mt Terrible track then we took all of the off chute tracks up to Mt Terrible Hut. It was a foggy morning and we weren’t too sure if we would have any views up top, however we came out of the fog and had beautiful blue skies and a sea of clouds to look out to we got to the top roughly 11.00am with great views of Mt Buller and the whole ranges.
We then headed back along Mt Terrible track to Eildon/Jamieson road where we aired back up, had lunch and we all headed for home.
